R.I.P Formula One
March 12th 2008 04:33
Its that time of the year again, when I , like so many other people the world over become nocturnal, yes Formula One is here again.
I will still watch it until the wee small hours, but in recent years it has become boring to watch at times. Murray Walker has retired, James Hunt went to the big circuit in the sky. Which brings me to point out , that the most important thing that Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley have forgotten is that Formula One is supposed to be a sport, not an evil business conglomerate.
Being of a certain age I remember Formula One when Sideburns where standard, most of the cars looked like cigarette packets and the aerodynamic aids were tall enough to scare hovering helicopters. The drivers then were true personalities not PR minions, Names like Niki Lauda, Clay Regazzoni, Sir Jackie Stewart and who could forget James Hunt and Gilles Villeneuve. They were heroes to kids my age.
Only a generation before them, many died at the wheels of their race cars and according to Enzo Ferrari, The greatest honour was to die racing one of his cars. Nice fellow! Even the drivers of the eighties Mansell, Prost, and the legendary Senna gave you something, they gave their all in pursuit of the chequered flag and made every race worth watching.
So this year as I nod off sometime after the seventh or ninth lap and wake up in time for the trophy presentation, I will know the answer to the question, Who made Bernie God, Why, Bernie did!
