GM - Like sand through the hour glass!
April 16th 2009 14:57
Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of our lives!
Well the days of General Motors life anyway! The latest whispers from GM Headquarters mention the possible death of Pontiac and GMC.
So this may just leave Chevrolet, Cadillac and possibly Buick to fend off bankruptcy and the invading Japanese automotive hordes, well good luck with that!
If you look at the GM corporate auto website today there is a choice of 101 vehicles for you to confuse yourself with. Of course, about half of these are duplicates, so it becomes obvious they need to tidy up, but kill Pontiac?! What is that all about! The Pontiac G8 (aka Holden Commodore) has only just started walking off the showroom floor.
Way back, when only college professors and immigrants bought weird foreign cars, each GM division had their own separate identity. Cadillac was for pretend capitalists, Buick was for bank managers and other professionals, Chevy was for Mom, Pop and fleet buyers, Pontiac was the performance unit and Oldsmobile was for old farts –sorry, folks!
So what went wrong?
Apart from the competition from Ford, Chrysler and everyone else, the General started to compete with itself internally. Whereas each model car may have had the same platform and different bodywork, the model sharing became more and more obvious over time. A close look at the GM range now reveal only the badge, grille and trims are different from division to division.
Once the decks are cleared, (That is assuming of course that GM survive the storm) it will be interesting to see exactly what the GM range will comprise of.
One thing is for sure, none of them will be as interesting as the 59 Cadillac you see here!
