False start for Pontiac G8 ST!
January 12th 2009 14:12
It never ceases to amaze me!
General Motors, desperate for sales, go and kill a perfectly good vehicle that might even challenge the Japanese at their own game.
The Pontiac G8 ST (For Sport truck) was to be a new century version of the Chevy El Camino and GMC Caballero. I say “was” because Pontiac has killed it according to the US press. The reason, they say is that it would not be a volume seller and would strictly be a niche product. Open your eyes GM, this is a car based truck, anyone else got one of those on sale in the USA, thought not!
Plenty of manufacturers do okay as “niche marketers” lets face lots of little sales add up to big sales, right? Autoloud knows it is a different product but Ford sell over 500,000 units of the F Series every year. Wonder how many of those are two wheel drive, base model pick ups! Surely there is a market somewhere for the truck even with the V6 engine. I guess the American truck buyer will have to buy a Toyota instead!
The New York Motor show has begun and it is the Europeans and Japanese who have shown some interesting cars. Detroit however, continues to plug on with hybrids (sorry!) How does an electric Cadillac sound? Chrysler showed a heap of concepts all of which are either Hybrid or electric powered. And Ford showed an all new Taurus and a Flex with some changes, Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!
Nothing like having your finger on the pulse is there!
