Commercial television journalism and Motor Cars!

You can always tell when it has been a slow news week. Australian Television networks obviously seem to think that our days are so boring that they need a little spicing up. The shows that AUTOLOUD is discussing with you are those two pinnacles of Journalistic integrity (not!) known as Current Affair and Today tonight.
They are guaranteed to tell you about neighbours who fight, Councils behaving badly and my personal favourite, Lets kick the Motor industry! Both programmes are magnificent at what amount to hatchet jobs on the poor old car industry.
Now I am the first to admit that there are good and bad in this particular sector but why do we have to hear about the bad guys all the time? It would be a more positive experience to hear a simple tale about the car salesperson who received a letter of thanks from a customer for doing a good job (Don’t be too surprised this does actually happen!).
Another so-called public interest story they run with is the story “How to save money at car auctions” This shows that they are not too smart because this is little more than a thinly disguised infomercial for one particular Auction company. If the channels chose to research the other side of the coin of buying at Auctions, that is the bad points, then perhaps we would see a more realistic viewpoint.
Channel Nine love to wheel out their industry expert, John Cadogan at the drop of a hat. Several weeks ago, he appeared in more Channel Nine shows than Eddie McGuire did. Mr Cadogan appears to be so busy with his television guest spots one wonders how he finds time to complete his real job, which is to edit Wheels magazine. Which, in a strange coincidence Channel Nine also own! Unbiased, probably not!
If you watch television on a regular basis, you will notice just how much advertising Motor Manufacturers place. The amount spent is probably in Tens of Millions on a yearly basis. Perhaps the manufacturers need to pull these ads from the two networks and spend the money elsewhere, like maybe anywhere else!
Imagine how many more Alfa Romeos, Fiats and Skodas they could sell, if they advertised on SBS!
