The arrival of a copy of both Autotrader UK and Autotrader NZ magazines in one month is an event to be celebrated.
Like most journals ( and websites) of their ilk the whole point of their existence is to sell motors, plain and simple. Filled with glossy colour photos they lure you in, you begin to think "What if?" But sadly for we Colonials, most of the confections on display cannot be imported due to Australian import regulations, unless of course they are older than 1988 but regardless, even allowing for exchange rates, what a lolly shop!
Not much has changed over the years, if you fancy a CHEAP luxury big car, then the UK is the place for you because for the same price as a used BMW 3 series sedan, you can have a 7 series sedan. Mercedes Benz fare no better, a used S Class will cost you the same as a C Class! Advertised in the current issue of Autotrader UK is a high Mileage BMW 735i in current shape which, for the not so princely sum of 3800 pounds Thats about 8200 Australian Pesos for a new shape 7 and that is a lot of car for little money, Interested? Thought you might be!
How about a Classic Mini in a 1998 model with 46000mls for 3995 pounds ($8500 OZ), The range of cars available is amazing with oddball stuff ( to Australian eyes anyway!) like Fiat Coupe's, Lancia Intergrale all offering great value. Oh and if you want a hot hatch the UK is the place to be!
Little Toyko or New Zealand as it used to be called, is one of the biggest homes of Japanese used cars in the world. When the Kiwi Government altered the import rules all those years ago, I am sure they never envisaged a final result like this. Except, possibly for Commodore and Falcon, New Zealand used cars are generally less expensive than comparable Australian vehicles. Due to the lack on design rules, all the Japanese go-faster bits and cars so beloved by the reversed baseball cap crowd, AKA the doof-doof brigade, are legal.
One special thing about the Kiwi car market, due to the currency exchange rate we Aussies automatically get a 20% discount, just as it should be!
