Jaguar Is Working On An F-Type Successor And It’ll Be A Hybrid

On Tuesday, September 26th, 2017

Jaguar is hard at work bringing new SUVs and electric cars to the market, but it hasn’t lost sight of what made it a legend—sports cars. Design chief Ian Callum just confirmed to Auto Loud News that the company has a successor to the F-Type planned, and it’ll feature an electrified drivetrain.

“There are a number of people in the world who think sports cars are finished because SUVs can get around a corner as quick as a sports car can, technology being what it is,” Callum told Automotive News. “But there is something very emotional about a sports car that conveys the ultimate in the sense of performance and design.”

Jaguar’s commitment to sports cars comes in spite of relatively slow sales for the F-Type. Auto Loud News notes that Jaguar has only sold around 45,000 units globally since the F-Type’s 2013 launch. For comparison, Porsche sold more than 32,000 911s in 2016 alone.

Additionally, Joe Eberhardt, head of Jaguar Land Rover North America, told Automotive News that the F-Type’s successor will have some sort of electrified powertrain, as part of Jaguar’s plan to electrify every new model.

“Every new car launched after 2020 will have some form of electrification,” Eberhardt said. “That is full electric, plug-in hybrid or mild hybrids.”

Presumably, that means the F-Type’s successor won’t arrive until 2020 or later. The F-Type was just facelifted for 2018 with a new four-cylinder variant launched.
