An opportunity missed!

Just in case you didnt notice, you can now buy a brand new car for the equivalent of 1200 pounds sterling or roughly $3000 OZ dollars. Well, as long as you live in India that is. What was known as the 1 lakh car (100000 rupees) has been released.
The Tata Nano is a small four door sedan which is powered by a rear mounted 650cc 2 cylinder. A four speed gearbox is standard and this combo ( I wont call it a power-train, that would be an overstatement! ) propels, sorry strolls up to a top speed of around 105kmh! The car itself looks not unlike a cartoon version of Daewoo Matiz, ie blobby body little wheels, so obviously the styling department didnt spend too much time on it. Two versions are available, the more upmarket versions coming with Air-conditioning and alloy wheels.
The aim of company chairman Ratan Tata was to provide an affordable car for the Indian people and the release price of the car has probably achieved that goal. The question has to be asked, what does the car bring in the way of new technology, and the answer is simple not a lot. This is strictly an old tech vehicle, it is not made of recyclable plastic and the engine runs on petrol not methane or even renewable ethanol. Considering the projected sales figures this is a car that will get India mobile but at cost of continued global warming.
