Auto Loud - October 2011

I feel a Woody coming on!

October 24th 2011 13:50
Call me old fashioned (strange even!) but Autoloud is developing a strange fixation with Woodies!

Woodie wagon

Now before you worry about my sexuality it should be pointed out that I mean the station wagons with woodgrain adorning the sides.

Hugely popular in the Yoouknightedstates - the trend made the trip across the Atlantic in the late 1950s and 1960's when English manufacturers also adopted the woodtrim look. Ford gave us the Mk I Cortina Squire while Austin/ Morris/BMC presented the Mini (albeit a fake) and Morris Minor Travellers.

Stylish then, they have a certain cachet now, the only problem is the price the manage to achieve. A decent Minor Traveller will cost the sharp end of $20,000 AUD while anything American in reasonable condition can easily double that figure.

The thought of a 20 foot long American barge with an acre of plastic wood on the side is looking more attractive to my bifocals every day- but maybe the answer lies in assembling an "Aussie" rendition of a woody.

Commodore Wagon

Pick a wagon with chrome bumpers like the VB-VH series Holden Commodore above, lower it, throw a set of whitewalls/Moon Discs at it, decorate the sides with some woodgrain and the look just came together. Throw a surfboard on the roof and a star is born!

Weird ? Maybe! Cool? Definately!
