Is this the car that killed Pontiac?

Is this the car that killed Pontiac?

pontiac G3

Well, not on its own anyway, it had a lot of help! The Pontiac G3 was a hastily nose lifted Chevy Aveo which was no more than a facelifted Daewoo Kalos! The G3 is apparently as popular as the Zastava Yugo was, actually strike that, the Yugo is probably more popular!

Who could forget the car that looked like Michael Jacksons nose, the Pontiac Aztek. Hopefully the guy who authorised that for production, has done the honourable thing today and committed seppaku on the steps of GM Corporate head office, they do still have one don’t they?

The current shape G6 also suffers from a similar condition, depending on the angle you view the car from it looks like a Jell-O mould or it has melted in the sun!

Even in the seventies and eighties Pontiac sold some monsters autos , the Astre for instance, which was a re-badged Vega. The X-car arrived in the form of the Phoenix and then the J Car AKA the J-2000. Remember them? Didn’t think so!

Whatever happened to the glory days, the Trans Am, the GTO, the Bonneville? All gone, left only as a distant memory to guys from the dim past.

The best Pontiacs of recent years were the Australian designed ones, The GTO and then the G8 arrived to much fanfare from the American motoring press, and unfortunately they were largely ignored by the American buying public, why? Well certainly the old “It isn’t really American” cry by old time Pontiac buyers didn’t help. The GTO (or Monaro) especially was badly treated by past GTO owners, the shame of it is, that instead of whinging about the car, they should driven, supported and bought it!

The G8 is another example. Car and Driver compared it to the BMW 5 series and said that dollar for dollar this car was a good as a Five series and yet here we are today seeing the car drive down the green mile!

Dead man walking!

New " Retro" Gullwing

April 27th 2009 14:54
I like old cars, one of the most dramatic cars of the last 60 years or so was the Mercedes Benz 300SL otherwise known as the Gullwing. It was probably the first real supercar and was, if I can make the comparison, was like the Starship Enterprise in a vehicle market full of sailing ships!

If, like Autoloud, you thought the original version of the Gullwing was a masterpiece then take a look at this!

Gullwing America 300 SL

A company called Gullwing-America, has revealed this 300 SL Panamericana concept.

It has the same old style looks but it is powered by the same 5.5-liter V8 from the SLR McLaren (minus supercharger) they might also power this retro tribute with a V6, which might make it cheaper, Mmmm probably not! All the company need is some orders to produce it!

The idea of a retro looking car with modern mechanicals always appeals to Autoloud and these guys have a track record as this beauty was designed by a guy called Arturo Alonso. He also styled the absolutely magnificent Bentley S3 E concept (also pictured), this British bruiser was BMW powered and if you are keen enough you can own one!

Bentley S3 E

Unfortunately the Gullwing and Bentley will have to wait until I win the $ 10 million Powerball on Thursday!!

I'm confused! Mini or Minor?

April 21st 2009 10:26
My research continues into which car Autoloud should buy. I have decided that ultimately it must not be an average car. Something with style and character (read old!) is what I want parked in the driveway of Autoloud.

I am narrowing choices down and I am following two distinct trains of thought.

One has me driving something from the stable of British Leyland. A Mini (the real one) is my first choice, but the other which is gaining support from Mrs Autoloud is the Morris Minor. The Mini can be sourced from Japan and these are normally fitted with air conditioning for that market, so this would be the more suitable car for living in Brisvegas. Apart from the fact that they are still a cool car, I drove a lot of them when I was younger, there are stories and NO, I won’t tell!

Morris minor traveller

The Minor is a motoring institution no matter which body shape you choose. I do prefer the Tourer and the woodframed Traveller but considering the prices they are advertised for, it will be the two or four door sedans for me.

The other problem with the minor is performance, it may be a little leisurely in the acceleration department but after reading some British magazines, this is curable. The English have transplanted everything from the 1275 cc engine from the MG Midget (which is almost a bolt in job) to the Rover V8! Here in OZ the most popular conversion is the Datsun 120Y engine and gearbox, which means performance is still leisurely but at least it doesn’t break down every day!

The more time I spend on this the more I get confused. We have not touched on the other train of thought, which would see me considering such interesting little sporty cars as the Suzuki Cappuccino and the Honda Beat. Any other ideas?

Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of our lives!

Well the days of General Motors life anyway! The latest whispers from GM Headquarters mention the possible death of Pontiac and GMC

Mine is bigger than yours!

April 5th 2009 13:38
Now I am not one to pick on people or stir controversy but four wheel drive or SUV drivers have a different mindset to all other road users. Sure a lot of these thing s are driven as people movers in lieu of something far more suitable to the task like a Tarago but I am here to tell you, that the reasoning behind the buying process of these off road boxes is almost Neanderthal in its simplicity.

AUTOLOUD has a theory that there is a case for scientific research on the direct link between length of the penis of the SUV driving male and the size of their individual vehicle. My theory is simple, some men, (not all men) that drive Pajero, Patrol, Landcruiser and Hummers (especially Hummers) are trying to make up for their short-comings in other departments
