Auto Loud - February 2009

Britannia really does rule!

February 24th 2009 14:16
The new small Rolls Royce is here! Of course it is not actually small unless you compare it with the Queen Mary 2 or the HMS Ark Royal.

Rolls Royce RR4 200EX

The new sedan shares its platform with the BMW 7 series and will probably become the most driver orientated Rolls Royce ever, which considering this motor car will compete with the Bentley Continental family will not be a bad thing! The days of rounding corners like the racing yachts at Cowes tacking may actually be over at RR.

Sharing the now trademark Rolls Royce rear coach doors (read suicide doors) the 200EX is a grand looking affair which has inherited its good looks from Phantom big brother. It is modern but the heritage is obvious for all to see.

Although this new Rolls is chasing a new type of buyer and is possibly a step down in social standing compared with its ancestors, there will no hybrids or diesel engines. Power will be provided by an enlarged BMW V12, see Britannia really does rule, albeit courtesy of Germany!!

As always, if one has the desire to match the paintwork with a favourite pair of socks or underpants then the person writing the check has that option! Will they do a tartan interior I wonder!

Will it sell? Of course it will! Would I have one, in a word yes! Anyone know where I can get a lazy million on good terms? Or an easy bank to rob!

In this blog entry I was going to talk about GM and Chrysler and the state of the US car industry. Sadly though it is not just the USA, although they are feeling it the most and deservedly so! From around the world, everyday we hear of factories closing here, projects cancelled, worker layoffs and bankrupt manufacturers, it is an overall gloomy outlook for the future.

The biggest concern for Autoloud, is once this rout is all over and we are left with the survivors, what will they build? I have this growing fear that they will build cars that they feel will have mass appeal. Undoubtedly they will be safe choices for them, cars that will not polarise the buying public, cars that will guarantee a fiscal return, in other words boring! Are we to see a major step backwards to a new time of conservatism? It could be that the days of building exciting cars, is in fact, over!

When this new world arrives and it will, what will we, as consumers do? Will we embrace these vehicles or will we force them to build the cars we really want to drive?

This is coming and it is not too far in the future, make your voice heard when the time comes, tell them we want cars that can induce goose-bumps, autos that make your hair stand on end when you rev the engines.

Motor manufacturers have only just learned what happens when people don’t buy cars and trust Autoloud on this, they are not about to forget it!

Just when you thought it was safe to return to the autobahns, Maybach, sorry, Mercedes Benz have unveiled the poorly named Maybach Zeppelin!

Maybach zeppelin

Now M/Benz will not like what I am about to say but this is NOT the best S class. This pachyderm of a pretender pales when compared with the 600 Grosser!

mercedes benz 600

The 600 was the most technically advanced car of its day thanks to its hydraulic suspension, windows, seats and even sunroof! Available in two wheelbases- Huge and Bloody hell its big! the 600 could also be had in a landauette version, just the thing for the brave but sunburnt dictator owner!

Famous or infamous owners of the original include names like Amin, Brezhnev, The Beatles and even a Holy Father or two! This car had style and performance as it lap times round the Mercedes Benz test track proved, it wa a quick as the 280SL!

Look at the two pictures and tell me, which one do you want?

Diesel Jag XK, Where do I sign?

February 3rd 2009 13:13
The largest and poorest Indian car company Jaguar is looking at installing a V6 diesel in the gorgeous XK coupe. The British websites are generally up in arms saying " a diesel engine in a sports car is not a sports car!" really? No-one told BMW or Mercedes Benz!
