Any last requests?
November 30th 2008 13:13
General Motors have announced that Pontiac, Hummer, Saab, Saturn and possibly Buick all face the firing squad. Any last requests! Doh! If motor company executives had any brains they would not make this kind of stuff public knowledge because the first thing people will do is NOT buy the car in question! That makes them easier to sell for sure!
Anyway, Hummer deserves it, it was only ever a fashion accessory, SAAB is only a re-bodied Opel Vectra and fools no-one into thinking it is still a Swedish oddity, Buick was once on option for Cadillac buyers, now it is not an option for anybody. However, Pontiac and Saturn seem to be the odd men out.
The Saturn division offers a range of European four cylinder Opel products with detail differences, which considering the current position of General Motors is not a bad scheme. How much does a new grille cost to tool up?
Down the road at Pontiac their hero car is none other than our own Holden Commodore with a dodgy nosecone. Sadly the whispers say that there are over 10 months worth of G8’s just sitting around…..waiting to be sold. This is obviously a disaster for Pontiac and although the price of “gas” (around US $ 2.00 per gallon!) has a lot to do with it, I think the biggest problem is the same drama they had with the GTO. It is the old “Not Invented here” syndrome.
“That ain’t no Pontiac!” they say. No it’s a Holden, it’s not perfect but it is still better than the crap Detroit builds! Get over it Billy Bob!
