Auto Loud - September 2008

OZ Top Gear put me to sleep!

September 29th 2008 11:02
It came, I saw, it sent me to sleep!

Top Gear Australia has arrived and I have to admit the best comments of the 25 minutes or so that I did see, came not from anyone on the show but from Mrs Autoloud, who declared “ This isn’t as good as the other version!” and “I don’t like him!” Charlie Cox might be a nice man and hopefully he wont take this personally but there is a message in this I’m sure.

I know it was the first episode but it all felt a bit too “try hard” for me.

4x4 to the sand, tick that box, Porsche to Tasmania, Mmmm, maybe Porsche to the top end would have made more sense!

Stig was disappointing, but then again on that track I am not surprised, surely SBS could have done a deal with Eastern Creek or Wakefield Park near Goulburn to really show what the cars could do.

A minor point here, the Luxury Car Tax arrived in 1989 not 1979! Research is wonderful thing if used correctly!

The “What were they thinking!” segment is probably where the Aussie version will end up! I miss Clarkson, Captain Slow and Hamster already!

Alas poor Bentley, I knew him well!

September 26th 2008 12:55
If you respect and desire Bentleys as much as AUTOLUD does, then join me for a moment’s silence.

The reason is the announcement of the final run of the Bentley Arnage.

Everyone has a theoretical top ten, and if that is the case then there are two, sometimes three Bentleys on mine. The Brooklands Coupe is there, the Continental GT (Sometimes!) and the Arnage.

The reason I love the Arnage so much is that it is a true Bentley, designed before the days of German ownership and powered by one the best engines in the world, the awesome 6.75 litre V8. This engine was engineered some 40 years ago and a continuing development programme has kept the motor up to date.

That’s not the only reason, I love how it looks, the stately façade that is easily destroyed by pushing the alloy pedal into the shag pile floor rugs and watching all break loose!

If this is a car for cads, bounders and bad boys then I want to be one!

Volkswagen will no doubt replace it with something more German but will it be better, only time will tell. Sharing a platform with Bugatti is an interesting concept, but will it really be a Bentley?

AUTOLOUD goes car shopping-Part 2

September 21st 2008 13:39
For AUTOLOUD, public transport is a new and shocking experience.

Brisbane Buses run when they feel like it and timetables become irrelevant, because if there is a connecting bus, you will either be 45 minutes early or it will have just left!

This is only a short term problem though. I am still on the hunt for a vehicle. I have looked at e-bay but that’s probably not the best way to buy a car, in fact it is one of the dearest. I have to admit I did see a Suzuki Cappuccino on there the other day that certainly looked cheap, but two days later with three days to go the price had trebled!

Auctions really don’t excite me, having been on that side of the fence, I know how they work.

I have looked at a “Kahdo”. This is a new system which provides you with a subsidised lease vehicle (Toyota Yaris)which is covered in advertising wrap. It is relatively cheap and gets you into a brand new motor for a year. We shall wait and see!

I have been scanning the classified ads, why I don’t know, because there is no such thing as a bargain anymore, members of the public generally try and sell their vehicles for more money than dealers “Just how much warranty does this come with?”

AUTOLOUD has to be honest; I have even considered a Ford Capri. Not the nice English version, but the Australian built Mazda 323 based convertible. Okay, you can stop laughing! Heres why; this is probably the cheapest way into a convertible that I know of, it’s got Mazda oily bits (not a bad thing!) and if you fiddle with them they look okay!

I cant believe I just said that!

September 18th 2008 13:55
A rumour that AUTOLOUD caught on the net, tells of the sale of a 1961 Ferrari GTO, for the princely sum of $ 28,500,000!! That’s right $28.5 million (US)!

Mr Bangle, meet Walt Disney!

September 12th 2008 13:36
Lately, every time I think of BMW I have visions of a darkened castle somewhere in Bavaria, lots of mad professors running round, while a thunderstorm rages outside. You get the idea! Apart from the X6 we talked about the other day, I just saw the concept Mini Crossover 4x4 on the net, where the hell did that idea come from! It is time for Chris Bangle to take off the designer glasses and have a lie down, BMW's are ugly!

Was Frankenstein a German?

September 9th 2008 13:35
You know, I am really not convinced about the BMW X6.

AUTOLOUD is trying to like it, just on the basis that it is different, but I am not so sure

Well AUTOLOUD hates to say I told you so, but, I did tell you so!

I have talked previously about the sale of Jaguar and Land-Rover by Ford to Tata and to refresh your memory, I wasn’t happy about it

We are all different!

September 4th 2008 13:29
Regular readers will know that AUTOLOUD prefers weird cars. Well maybe not weird, just a little off centre perhaps.
