Auto Loud - August 2008

AUTOLOUD goes car shopping: Part One!

August 30th 2008 13:53
For the first time in many years AUTOLOUD may have to buy a mode of transport! Now obviously there is a car in my driveway but it is jealously guarded by Mrs Autoloud, for it is her baby!

I have decided to shun mediocrity, whatever I buy will have character. The tack I have decided to take is to set myself a “TOP GEAR/AUTOLOUD challenge”

The budget is limited and will not extend to my dream cars, but in saying that there are also affordable dream cars. The other consideration is a 17 year old daughter who is close to getting her L plates.

So, it must be safe, it must carry three or four (so that takes sports cars out, which is a shame because a Japanese import MX5, Eunos roadster would be perfect) possibly older and it can’t be too powerful ( for her sake, not mine). Otherwise I am open minded.

A mental checklist helps: Italian- rusty and too unreliable, but a nice Alfasud might be okay. Maybe an old Benz? Stacked light 230 perhaps. Swedish? Would love to find a VOLVO 242 GT or a 262C, have always liked those. Saab? Maybe an early Kombi Coupe 3 door would be okay, but then again it is a SAAB! Mmmm maybe not!

The idea of driving a British car everyday holds some appeal for me, if I can find a Japanese import MINI but then that would be out of the budget. I have always hankered over a Landrover S2 swb or 109” soft top, paint it khaki green and that would be cool!

Ford? Well only if it is an Escort or a Capri (not the Mazda 323 convertible they used to build) if you could find one!

The other car I would love to get my hands on is an old London Taxi, now that would be super cool, I would look good driving one of those, and sensibly the later ones are powered by a Nissan diesel engine, same as a Navara. But then you have to import one, too hard!

A VW Kombi? too rich for my blood with basket cases now making silly money.

This may take a little more thought than I originally anticipated!

Psst! wanna buy a cheap SUV company?

August 25th 2008 14:30
You may or may not have worked out that AUTOLOUD is not a big fan of SUV's.

In the last couple of days GM have announced (sort of) that the big daddy of all SUV's,HUMMER is for sale.

Now as far as these things go the HUMMER is about as close in evolutionary terms as you get to a Dinosaur in these modern times. They roam the planet conspicuously consuming fair size lumps of the planets resources, just like the bigger Dinosaurs then!

How times have changed! The H1 on release was about as cool as you could get in Hollywood,(Not that Tinsel-Town is any indication of the real world ) these days a Prius is the way to go for the socially aware movie starlet.

Hummers look tough, no doubting that but whoever the new owners are, surely they would have to realise, that to make them acceptable some major changes will be required. Outside of the USA they make little or no sense.

Maybe a Hummer that competes with Forester/ Rav4 class of car. Keep the same tough looks just shrink it and stick in a small turbo diesel engine.

Whoever the lottery winners are, I hope they have a big enough piggy bank to keep it afloat, for their own sake!

Leyland P76- Was it really that bad?

August 17th 2008 11:44
No, my eyes did not deceive me. Burbling away in the rush hour traffic was one of Australia’s motoring icons. Its once proud Avocado green paint, looking a little faded and in dire need of some polish.

AUTLOUD got excited because it is not every day that you actually see a Leyland P76 in the flesh, is it? It seems hard to fathom that this car is now thirty five years old!

The P76 was released in 1973 by Leyland as a direct competitor to the big three, namely Ford, Holden and Chrysler. On release the P76 was an advanced motor vehicle compared with its direct competition. Features such as Rack and pinion steering, McPherson Strut front suspension and an Alloy engine were considered normal fare for European cars, but not for the Big Aussie six.

Styled, if that is the right word, by the Italian design house Michelotti, the P76 was, to be polite, unusual looking. The advertising of the time crowed about the Leyland’s ability to carry a 44 gallon drum in the boot. Of course, they never actually told you why you needed to carry one, but there you go!

If nothing else the names of the colour range proved that Leyland had a sense of humour. Shades such as Am eye blue, The Lone oranger and Plum loco must have kept the marketing department in fits of laughter for a fair while!

The original grand plan was to offer a complete range of P76 derived vehicles. This never came to pass. Tucked away in a garage in Sydney to this day is the only Station wagon version built.

The more famous variant was the Force 7 coupe. They built around 80 of this good looking three door hatchback, most of which were scrapped when the P76 was cancelled. Eight survived and are now spread over the globe.

The P76 ceased production in Australia in 1974. Production continued in New Zealand until 1976 and all up they built a total of 18000 vehicles.

The P76 was no better or worse then the Kingswood, Falcon and Valiant. Although like the majority of British Leyland products of the era, the P76 wasn’t a bad car, just a badly built one!

Depending on your age, it is time to either dig out the flat tweed cap and string-back gloves or the baseball cap. You see Nanjing Automobile Company have announced that it is only weeks until they release the all new British sports car (made in China!) the MG TF 500LE!

Actually the first ones are to be built in at the old Austin/ Morris, British Leyland/ Rover factory in Longbridge so at least geographically they truly are British
