Auto Loud - July 2008

Mr Ratan Tata, obviously has too much time on his hands! You see, the new owner of Jaguar and Land-Rover has been making noises that he may possibly bring back Daimler as a brand in its own right. This idea goes hand in hand with taking Jag and L-R up market to the 100,000 pound market. The theory is that Daimler will come in at Bentley and Rolls Royce levels.

AUTOLOUD hopes that he searches further back in Daimler’s history for inspiration. Forget about the era of badge engineered Jaguars, go straight to the opulent and downright ostentatious era of Sir Bernard and Lady Nora Docker.

The chairman of Daimler since the early part of the war was Sir Bernard Docker, in the dark days after World War two, the British Motor industry basically offered pre war models which were largely underpowered and boring little cars.

The Docker Daimlers were a series of specials based on various Daimlers. The first of which, a straight eight roadster nicknamed the Green Goddess was based on a DE36 chassis. This was the most expensive car at the 1948 Earls Court Motor show being valued at £7001.

In 1950 Lady Docker told her husband that Daimlers needed to sell more cars to the public. She was obviously a persuasive woman because she designed her own car and had it covered with 7000 gold stars! She also had all the chrome gold plated and grabbed more publicity than a naked Paris Hilton going shopping! The Dockers followed this in 1952 with the Blue Clover, based on the new 3 litre Sports Special Convertible Coupe.

Now this was innovative marketing for the time! If Daimler is to be reborn, what models should they consider? Certainly not re-badged Jaguars! What is required at the top end is a brave new style, one which harks back to the DR450 and DS 420 Limousines. If handled correctly this car would make a perfect rival for the Rolls Royce Phantom.

The Daimler Double Six should be a more sporting sedan; this car would be S class or BMW 7 series size. The car will also be competing with the Maserati Quattroporte, Aston Martin Rapide and the Porsche Panamera. Plenty of performance with heaps of style is required here.

1996 Daimler Corsica

The final car in the new range is the Daimler Corsica (sigh!). Built to celebrate the centenary of Daimler in 1996, the Corsica was a convertible and coupe based on the Jaguar X300 XJ6/8 body shell. Why they didn’t build this car was beyond belief!

The only worrying thing about all of this is, which British brand is next for exhumation!

They trumpet that this is Australia’s first supercar!

It does have a 7.0 litre, 370kw V8 thundering under the bonnet, it does have a set of 20 inch alloy wheels and brake discs bigger than a family size Pizza tray and it does have a set of exhaust pipes that make it sound like the Concorde at take off.

But regardless of all of this, it is still a $150,000 Holden Commodore! That’s right folks 150 grand for a dressed up Commodore!

The HSV W427 is the ultimate weapon in the HSV arsenal, but in reality, is it?

It will sell like beer in an outback pub, Mate! Six months ago blokes were paying deposits as large as $ 20,000 just to hold one, without knowing how much it was!

The external styling of the car is reasonably restrained, although AUTOLOUD does feel that the grille is way too Audi or Rover 75 in my view. I could be wrong but the type of buyer that HSV attracts may feel that it is a bit boring in the looks department.

The interior, well, it is red and rather loud! HSV should have visited a BMW or a Mercedes Benz dealership and opened the driver’s door of an M5 or any AMG product and actually looked inside! Obviously that did not happen!

The thought that I can’t get past is, why is it worth $ 70,000 more than a VE GTS?
I can’t see the value myself. Do the maths, How much is the engine worth? $15,000? Even if you said $4000 for the 20” wheels, the rest of the stuff are just trinkets really. Consider for a minute that most of the trinkets are already fitted as standard to a 6.2 litre GTS. Did someone say “Massive profit opportunity”, oh, that was Holden!

Big cars are now the dinosaurs of the new millennium. Manufacturers the world over are working on solutions to make cars like these socially acceptable. In ten years time this is car that simply will not be allowed to be produced.

I know that this is supposedly the epitome of the Australian Sports sedan; it is a well developed, powerful car. Now AUTOLOUD should say that I am all for personal freedom, I am not a greenie and I am as open minded as the next bloke but in these days of 110kmh speed limits, hidden cameras, radar guns and wombats on the roads, just where the hell can you use all 375 kw at once?

So, for those lucky 427 people who will spend the necessary dollars to own one of these Omegas in wolf clothing; Enjoy the W427 while you can and the petrol lasts!

The Automotive world is becoming more like a soap opera every day. It was hard enough for Industry observers to work out who owned who before, but as time goes on the relationships are getting more jumbled.

Recent events have shown that no brand is safe, for example did you ever think Jaguar and Landrover would become Indian owned. Don’t forget the remnants of MG/Rover that now have a Chinese postcode and of course Porsche buying into Volkswagen. The rumour mill continues to guess as to who is next.

The favourite Sports utility vehicle of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, the HUMMER, could well be the next victim. Once the favoured toy of the rich and famous, these mobile metal mountains are now about as trendy as smoking while you drink drive and wearing a fur coat made from baby seal skin you clubbed yourself!

Subtle, is it not!

For a short time here in Brisvegas the Hummer became the favoured ride for school pick up too, it had to be black and have at least a set of 24” Chrome alloys. The Mummy’s loved them, even though needed a ladder to get in and a parachute to get out!

Supposedly the main contender at this stage to buy HUMMER is Mahindra. They are another Indian brand. They specialise in building 4x4 vehicles, most of which are based on the World War 2 Jeep. See, there is a thread of connection there straight away. Jeeps/ war = Hummer/ war!

AUTOLOUD drove a Hummer H1 pick up once. All Ferrari red with a growling 6.2 litre Turbo diesel V8, I was astounded at how big it felt to drive. Most big cars shrink around you as you drive, but not the HUMMER it grew instead!

AUTOLOUD sat in a HUMMER H3 recently; I say sat because I will not drive one, just don’t want too! Besides, my kneecap bashes into the dashboard on entry causing me great pain and suffering. HUMMERS really are not designed for people over 6 feet tall. If you have to have a BIG 4x4, then give me a Toyota Landcruiser any day.

Oh, as for the parachuting Mum’s, good sense has now prevailed and they seem to be quite content driving their Golf TDi hatches without need of parachutes and crutches!

Okay, I admit it; AUTOLOUD is unashamedly a nostalgia freak.

New Cars largely do not interest me. I cast my eyes upon the roads of Australia and notice how similar they all look. Have you noticed that the FG Falcon / Mondeo/ Mazda 6 all seem interchangeable

AUTOLOUD read recently that so called Premium brands charge so much for their vehicles because that is what the consumer will pay! Mmmm, are consumers really that stupid?

It’s a badge thing. I don’t wish to sound cynical here, but does that mean if we don’t buy these things, then when will the prices come down

Heilige Scheiße!

July 2nd 2008 14:42
Imagine the scenario, Mercedes Benz or BMW decide to launch an all-out attack on the Australian V8 supercar series, with a challenger of there own.

They have a wide range of suitable vehicles to choose from, so what do they choose as a challenger? How about an S- class or a BMW 7 series in long wheelbase sedan form
