Auto Loud - April 2008

How much is too much to spend on a car?

Now, we are not discussing museum pieces here. Cars that have a racing pedigree longer than the Mulsanne straight also do not count. I am talking about a car that you will drive on the road and even drive to a certain fast food restuarant and you will hear the magic question " Would you like fries with that?"

Australias priciest cars start with the recently listed Bugatti Veyron at around $2.7 million dollars (not including dealer delivery and stamp duty!) Which makes the Rolls Royce Phantom family look like bargains, as they start at only $ 915,000 and work up to the $ 1.3 million mark for a convertible! The Maybach is in the vicinty pricewise but is it really worth nearly twice the price of a Mercedes Benz S Class, I think not!

Bugatti Royale Coupe

Now, If these cars arent exclusive enough for you, you will be happy to know that Bugatti are toying with the idea of a new Royale. To refresh your memory, the Royale was the most exclusive car available in the 1930's. Powered by a 12.7 litre straight eight Rail car engine, this seven metre long Behemoth was a car to be owned by the crowned heads of Europe. Bugatti was not shy and also took commoners money too, of course!

This new Zenith in automotive excess will be coachbuilt to an individual purchasers personal tastes. Much the same as the original then!
The idea is to offer a Saloon and Bugatti Atlantic like Coupe at prices in the 4 million Euro range! Thats only $ 6.6 million Australian dollars!

Dont spill that chocolate shake, will you!

How good is your memory? Remember back in the early to mid 1980's when every man and his dog sold their six cylinder cars to buy four cylinder cars?

It was a difficult time for the Australian motor industry, both the Ford V8 engine and the Kingswood/ Statesman died around this time and sudenly everyone had a Corona/ Sigma/ Bluebird as a company car. Why? The price of fuel.

Since then, we as a nation have embraced the American way. Hell, we are one of the most urbanised nations on Earth and yet we have one of the highest rates of 4x4 ownership in the world ( I hate the term SUV, so I wont use it! ). Mums drive them to school, to the shops, to coffee but hardly ever to the Outback or the beach. If you want to move five or six kids then apparently these things are the only way to go!

Australians (and the motor trade) are now experiencing the same kind of symptoms as we did back in the eighties. This last month or so, most of the trade-ins I have looked at have all had 4 x4 in their badge . The funny thing is that the owners who are trying to ditch these things won't admit that fuel consumption has anything to do with their decision.

Amongst the favoured excuses heard at the moment include,
1" I just dont use it any more!",
2" Its too big for my wife to drive!""
3 "It wont fit in the garage!"

What they are really trying to say is:

1 It only does 12 MPG
2 It only does 12 MPG and she is sick of putting fuel in it!
3 It only does 12 MPG, please take this thing away before it bankrupts me!

The upshot of all this is quite simple, the used vehicle market is flooded with all shapes and sizes of 4x4's and values are plummeting. The big bruiser Patrol and Landcruiser in petrol automatic form are the worst hit, with Landrover Discovery V8 and Jeeps of all models following close behind. The problem will only compound as more people try to quit them.

On reflection, Its a shame we did not follow the Europeans at some stage. If you really needed an eight seater, the option of a Turbo diesel powered Renault Grand Espace would surely now be looking quite sensible.

I am not a number!

Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman would be proud!

Now well into its middle age, the Lotus Seven continues to thrive in the form of the Catherham R500. The latest iteration is powered by a 263bhp two litre Duratec four cylinder, which is rather more power than the 47bhp the original Seven came with!

No-one would ever dare call the Seven a heavy car. Though the engineers at Caterham obviously decided the R500 could do with a trim, so by adopting the favoured Colin Chapman formula of weight loss " Add more lightness" off came nine kilos. You can thank the addition of Kevlar, carbon fibre and thinner panels for that.

Forget Bugatti Veyrons, anything by Ferrari and Zonda, this is a seriously quick car. Paddling through the optional six speed sequential gearbox to the 8500rpm redline, will see the 0-100kmh time come up in only 2.8 seconds!

People of a certain age may remember a television show starring Patrick McGoohan called "The Prisoner". This cult TV show from the sixties, featured a British Racing Green with yellow nosecone Seven in the streets of London. ( Available on youtube, just type in The Prisoner).

The R500 was not around in 1967, probably just as well. They would have had to re-name the show!

Cars @ websites dotcom part2

April 17th 2008 03:07
The arrival of a copy of both Autotrader UK and Autotrader NZ magazines in one month is an event to be celebrated.

Like most journals ( and websites) of their ilk the whole point of their existence is to sell motors, plain and simple. Filled with glossy colour photos they lure you in, you begin to think "What if?" But sadly for we Colonials, most of the confections on display cannot be imported due to Australian import regulations, unless of course they are older than 1988 but regardless, even allowing for exchange rates, what a lolly shop

cars @ websites dotcom

I love the Internet, it brings the whole world to your desk and saves you the airfares.

The motoring world is especially well catered for in this dotcom world. Ever had those dreams like " If I win Lotto....." Most big dollar manufacturers provide you with a car configurator on their websites to enable you to order your perfect car or at least see what it would look like. Maserati, Aston Martin, BMW, Mini and Mercedes all offer this feature, the king of them all is Bentley. Their configurator not only allows you to choose from the current range or last years range of Bentleys, it also allows to pick the finest interior detail such as the colour of the leather stitching and carpet binding, nice! If you display poor taste in your selection, it becames flagged as " Not recommended" How polite

"Get Smart!" and the American way

April 5th 2008 12:04
Now, at the outset I have to say I dont personally dislike Americans, but the world is slowly realising that there would be perhaps a lot more oil around if the American motor industry had been a little more considerate in the past. Im not saying they are greedy but while the rest of us were tootling along in small four cylinder cars or even big six cylinder cars, the American idea of a medium sized car would have rivalled a Brisbane City Council bus in overall length.

Ah, the good old days when a four door pillarless hardtop, chrome plated American dream propelled by a massive V8 engine had to have at least a four barrel carburettor stuck on top, this combination, when fired up in anger, would suck air at a rate that threathened roadside fence posts and small animals as the car drove past. Maybe Freud had a theory about the correlation between car size and appendage size that he only told Americans

With apologies to William Blake, I wanted to talk about things British.

That once mighty industrial powerhouse that was the British motor industry is now no more than a cottage industry, reduced to ekeing out its existance by the remaining small concerns in even smaller sheds. Most of the big names still exist, but only in name. There are still a significant volume of vehicles built in the United Kingdom by foreign owned companies but in all honesty, these days you do have to look pretty hard to find a truly British car company
