Auto Loud - March 2008

After months of speculation the sale of Jaguar and Land-Rover has finally eventuated. The ker-ching noise you heard was the Ford till being opened and the sound of 2.3 Billion dollars (US) being tipped in.

From Fords point of view the sale proceeds may slow the bleeding down to a trickle, for a short time at least, but was this move really that smart? Two recent events should have been a contributing factor in the decision to sell.

The new Jaguar XF has just arrived and is probably the most modern Jaguar sedan since the XJ series arrived in 1968, Land-Rover have shown the LRX concept and will bring the marque into a new market segment. Both these vehicles are significant in that they are a step forward for the respective brands.

I have to admit I am no expert but in my opinion Jaguar could have been saved and turned around by Ford, the X-Type was a nowhere car compared to the German and Japanese competition. The car should have moved to a downsized RWD S-Type platform and modernised, a front and rear facelift to ditch the circa 1970 Jaguar look and even if you continued to run a Ford V6 engine, this car would have competed with the BMW 3 series and the the Lexus IS series. This platform would have also given you the promised F type sports car and how about an X-type coupe like the late lamented XJ-C.

The other car that Jaguar should have invested in was a crossover / SUV. Now before you start to cough and splutter look at what the competition offer, the BMW X5, the Mercedes Benz M class, the VW triplets- Audi Q7, Toureg and the Porsche Cayenne, then you have the Lexus and the Volvo XC 70 and 90. Most of these vehicles make a major contribution to the makers bottom line. The most simple solution for Jaguar would have been a re-bodied Land-Rover or a Cross Country- Allroad version of the X-Type wagon.

The past is the past and so to the future, Jaguar has to be re-born, it cannot continue to survive as it is, if the Indians need inspiration perhaps they should look at Cadillac. If any company can show how to shed a dowdy image and start again, its them. India have won the toss and they are batting first so it will be interesting to see what TATA do with their innings.

This is rather sad but the highlight of my Saturday night TV viewing is the dusty episodes of TOP GEAR that SBS are currently rolling out for us. According to my calculations these shows are probably close to six or possibly seven years old! I mean Jezza still has black hair! and Hamster looks like he just stopped wearing a school uniform!

Now, Im not really complaining but couldnt SBS find something a little newer for us to slaver over? Tonights episode featured lots of luxo-barges including Jeremy testing, sorry, being a hooligan in a Bentley Arnage T, stirring stuff it was too! If you missed it you probably missed your only chance to see what a Bentley looks like being thrashed sideways ( Sigh!) Balls the size of basketballs i suspect!

TOP GEAR is probably the epitome of Car shows on TV and I am hoping that the Australian version ( coming later this year) will retain this high standard. I say hoping because I dont know that it can. You see, I think the problem with the Australian version will be budgetry more than anything else. Challenges will be problematic, remember the 1500 quid challenge for sport coupes and the Italian supercar for 10000 quid. Ever seen a Ferrari for $ 10000 in OZ? How about a $ 1500 Jaguar XJS or BMW 633 No, neither have have I and trust me I do know where to look, the only XJS I have seen for that kind of money had no engine and rust holes the size of your fist, makes it hard to get it roadworthy dosent it! What about the weekly challenge for a star in a reasonably priced car, translates to a $ 20000 - $30000 car here so what is the most boring car they could pick? Well the newest series in England has traded the Suzuki Liana in for a Daewoo, sorry Chevrolet Lacetti or Holden Viva to us. Problem solved there then!

I wish SBS well with the Australian version but I fear that it will turn into another weekly advertising feature for Holden and Ford, just like Wheels and Motor magazines continue to churn out on a monthly basis. If it does watch me and people like me turn off in droves!

The Australian new vehicle market already offers the new vehicle purchaser a veritable cornucopia of choices. Regardless of which sector you look at, the competing models within each one is complete and sometimes confusing.

2009 heralds the arrival of the first ( probably of many) Chinese built brands to arrive in Australia. The CHERY brand will be imported by Ateco Automotive, they are taking three passenger models initially. Chery is the largest independant vehicle manufacturer in China, now I say independant because the bulk of Chinese manufacturers are involved in a joint venture of some description or another with the usual suspects.

Other Chinese brands are making their way out into the world, one of which Geely, has had their cars crash tested in Russia! The Geely Zi You Jian (which translates as Freedom vessel) scored so miserably that even the Chinese press dubbed it the Death vessel! Not a good start then! Not all Chinese cars are this bad, the Lifan scored Five stars.

Now if like me, you look at YOUTUBE occassionally, you should punch in the search term " Chinese crash tests" but only do so on an empty stomach ,YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Who said the Chinese have no sense of humour, this monster is the latest model from First Auto Works, the Hongqi (Bless You!) is a Rolls Royce Phantom clone powered by a V12! and it can be bought for around $600,000 US. Makes the Phantom look like a bargain really.

See some comrades are more equal than others!

David Coulthard swore! Good for him!

So the Australian F1 is all over for another year, and yes I did doze off! but only for a couple of laps!

Channel Ten need shooting after telling everyone that the race started at 3PM. I sat in my favourite chair at about five to three, turned the TV on and discovered that I was watching Lap nine! So thanks for that Channel ten! As for the commentary team, well they sprout the most inane dribble known to man, most of the time. Hopefully if we keep the Grand Prix they can throw some decent money around to secure a decent commentary team. My diary is free by the way for that weekend

R.I.P Formula One

March 12th 2008 04:33
Its that time of the year again, when I , like so many other people the world over become nocturnal, yes Formula One is here again.

I will still watch it until the wee small hours, but in recent years it has become boring to watch at times. Murray Walker has retired, James Hunt went to the big circuit in the sky. Which brings me to point out , that the most important thing that Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley have forgotten is that Formula One is supposed to be a sport, not an evil business conglomerate

The anouncement of another new Honda Accord, Yawn! Its not even a Euro!

The all new Honda Accord is the American version, its a big boring car, in size its directly comparable to a Falcon or Commodore. This confirms what AUTOLOUD has known for some time, Japanese cars just keep getting bigger! The Japanese industry are grand masters at increasing the size of every new generation of model, without you even noticing! So in theory the 2050 model Suzuki Sierra will be about the same size as a Hummer H1, should be fun with a 1.3 litre, maybe not
