Timekeeping and Camry drivers, discuss!

January 21st 2008 12:45
If, like me, you are a little slow in rising in the morning, you will probably understand what I am about to discuss. You get out of bed, you shower (only 4 minutes though due to the current Queensland drought) you dress, you walk out the front door and get into the car. You congratulate yourself for achieving all of this in under nine minutes, start the car and drive off, this is where our morning begins to unravel!

The published speed limit for the road you are currently driving along is 60kmh and you begin to wonder as to why are we travelling at 42 kmh? A simple enough question with has an easy answer, at the head of the steady growing column of vehicles you are stuck in is a ............TOYOTA CAMRY!

Yep, The Toyota Camry, Australias favourite mobile road block, regardless of age of vehicle or owner, Camry drivers think differently to most other road users, You see the local government bodies who control our highways and byways think 60kmh is a sensible safe speed, unfortunately this view is not shared by Camry-person, they think thats far too fast! 40kmh is a far more sensible pace. In school zones the problem compounds itself, the speed limit there lowers to 40 kmh, Camry-person decides that either 18kmh or 23kmh is acceptable, so slow in fact that little old ladies on mobility scooters have the edge on top speed in these zones.

Now, dont get me wrong, I have a healthy regard for road safety, but our road toll would be much lower if Camry drivers were outlawed completely. ( Sorry Toyota & AM radio stations)Think about this for a minute, Camry and therefore Camry drivers have less roads accidents than other road users, that fact may be true but there are no statistics available on how many accidents they actually cause! They are a caring, sharing bunch of people after all boredom and yawning are very contagious!!

A little pointer for Camry drivers the suggested distance for indicating to turn a corner is three seconds, Not three kilometres or hourzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

An opportunity missed!

January 15th 2008 00:05
Just in case you didnt notice, you can now buy a brand new car for the equivalent of 1200 pounds sterling or roughly $3000 OZ dollars. Well, as long as you live in India that is. What was known as the 1 lakh car (100000 rupees) has been released.

The Tata Nano is a small four door sedan which is powered by a rear mounted 650cc 2 cylinder. A four speed gearbox is standard and this combo ( I wont call it a power-train, that would be an overstatement! ) propels, sorry strolls up to a top speed of around 105kmh! The car itself looks not unlike a cartoon version of Daewoo Matiz, ie blobby body little wheels, so obviously the styling department didnt spend too much time on it. Two versions are available, the more upmarket versions coming with Air-conditioning and alloy wheels.

The aim of company chairman Ratan Tata was to provide an affordable car for the Indian people and the release price of the car has probably achieved that goal. The question has to be asked, what does the car bring in the way of new technology, and the answer is simple not a lot. This is strictly an old tech vehicle, it is not made of recyclable plastic and the engine runs on petrol not methane or even renewable ethanol. Considering the projected sales figures this is a car that will get India mobile but at cost of continued global warming.

What do you do for a living (Part 1)

January 9th 2008 01:22
The silly season has ended, Hooray!!

Having been in the motor industry for a considerable amount of time, there is a question that strikes me with fear whenever I am socialising. The question?

" what do you do for a living?"

If I am honest in my reply as I usually am, " The Motor industry" you find an almost universal response, the face of the enquirer takes on an expression which always reminds me of the face you have straight after stepping in your pet Labrador's fresh brown landmine, with bare feet!

To work in the motor industry these days you have to be licensed by various Government bodies, this gets rid of the Burglars, Rogues and outright nasty to an extent but unfortunately the system is not perfect and some of those with a less than honest attitude will always slip through.

You can always spot a quiet news week, the media throw in lines like " How to save money on cars" How to save yourself from buying a lemon" yadda, yadda, yadda!! Apart from some of these stories mostly being a marketing exercise for motor auctions, there is little content of a newsworthy nature, How about a story about a dealership or saleperson who saved the buyer money and did a great deal for the buyer, funny I always miss those!

In general, car buyers are far more educated than they were 5 or 10 years ago and if they are not then they sould be, after all there is enough tools at their disposal. The thing that never ceases to amaze me is how a portion of the general public dont compare prices on used vehicles, shopping around the only figure that should matter is how much do you write a cheque for! Forget about trade prices, forget about any other facts and figures, this is all that matters.

Once you find the find that best price be kind to the salesperson! Please !! They are not that bad a person. After tax he may have just earned enough money to be a drink!
